The Dagger and the Devil

“Nathan, they want you to tell the story again!” the bartender shouted.

Nathan was a portly man who was in his late forties or early fifties, his eyes shifted across the room as hush fell over.

“You all are going to get me killed” he mumbled as he chugged his liquid courage.

“So we targeted the two for death, they had been making problems for the organization and we were going to silence them once and for all. So we thought.”

“Silas and Lucius strolled in the cathedral as if they were anointed by the gods themselves. We watched from the shadows as the priest led them deeper into the cathedral away from any quick escape.”

He seem so concerned for the town as he whispered in a hush voice “Where is the high priest? I have a urgent matter to discuss with him.”

The priest played dumb, as we all waited to spring the trap on the two.

“I watched with glee as the priest transformed into a were-rat and told Silas and Lucius they need not worry about the priest. We came out of the shadows and surrounded the two.” Nathan took another swig of his drink and motion the barkeep for another one “Silas looked around the room and said:

Five against two, normally I like a fair fight but I do not have time to wait for you all to gather reinforcements.”

The bar erupted in laughter as people quoted the line. Nathan waited for the cheering to die down before continuing on “I must admit I did not see the dagger but in a blink of an eye Silas slew the were-rat priest. Lucius screamed and cause two of my brethren to flee in terror. We continue to fight but one by one they slew everyone except me.”

Nathan hands trembled as he tried to drink more of his liquid courage “Silas want information from me, and I gave him everything I knew.” Taking another gulp and motioning the barkeep for more “He told me to get out of town and if I ever see him it would be the last thing I see. Which is why I work honestly for a living and try to stay out of trouble. I have learned that if you dance with the dagger and the devil you could not only lose your life but your soul.”

“So what do you want to do?”

Silas looked at Lucius and smirked “So I take it you are the devil? As to your question nothing we are just stopping through and by chance happen to cross path with a old friend.”

With that I left a few extra coins to cover Nathan’s tab and Lucius and I continue on our journey. The dagger and the devil I like that! D and D.
